    Our client had received a letter from HMRC in April 2025 stating that she would be required from April 2026, due to the new Making Tax Digital rules, to upload her sole trader income quarterly using digital software, in the same was as those who are VAT registered.  This would come into effect from 2026 for anyone whose income was > £50k and each financial year a lower income band would be required to comply. The client wanted to be ahead of the compliance requirements and to start the transition process to a digital platform with immediate effect.

  • the challenge

    ​The client was tech literate but time-poor and the brief was to help her transition to Xero accounting software as seamlessly as possible. Rather than spend a lot of time figuring it out, it made sense to consult a specialist.

  • annabel’s approach

    Initial briefing call with annabel’s certified Xero specialist to establish the client’s support requirements.  The annabel Xero specialist determined that the client was tech literate and could manage a number of tasks herself and therefore managed the follow up consultations accordingly.

    In 2 x sessions the client was managing the accounting platform herself and sharing it with her accountant for moving forward.

    A number of steps were undertaken to facilitate the mortgage application:

    ✓ Export YE 2025 sales / expenses from her current spreadsheet

    ✓ Help understanding and customising her Chart of Accounts

    ✓ Help creating invoices and invoice templates

    ✓ Understanding how to categorise reimbursements and how to share information with her accountant

  • the results

    Within a month, with the help of our specialist, our client had uploaded one year of historical accounts and created a simple to understand system for going forward supported by our specialist and her ‘how to’ guide for quick reference.  Our specialist was on hand to respond to any questions from our client’s accountant.

    The process has meant that the client and their accountant are now fully prepared for HMRC mandating the client for MTD in 2026 and the client is familiar with and in control of the new accounting software in place.
