''Organising airline travel for two dogs was certainly an unusual challenge, but I thoroughly enjoyed the research and was delighted to deliver a workable solution for the client." — annabel consultant

  • project background

The client sought to transport their dogs between Italy and the UK due to relocating while maintaining a base in both countries. The frequency of travel and preferred transportation method were initially unclear. The project aimed to:

    - Identify options for transporting pets between the two countries.

    - Confirm travel requirements including medical checks, paperwork, and travel cases.

  • the challenge

The main challenge was finding a cost-effective solution that ensured the dogs' comfort during travel.

  • annabel’s approach

We began by reviewing government guidelines on pet travel within the EU, focusing on vaccination requirements, necessary paperwork, and considerations for re-entering the UK. Specific requirements for Italy were also checked to ensure compliance with both countries' regulations.

Next, we researched various travel options for pets, identifying organizations that offer comprehensive services ranging from full door-to-door transport with all paperwork completed, to more basic services where the owner handles part of the process. However, these services did not include the animal’s airfare and did not guarantee a specific flight slot.

  • project planning

After presenting the options to the client, they chose to travel with the dogs in the cabin. The dogs met the size and weight requirements for cabin travel, and an airline with the appropriate route was found.

  • key steps

    flight booking
Confirmed availability for two dogs in the cabin and booked flights through Swiss Air, which allows pets in the cabin. This involved coordinating with the airline's Travel Services to reserve the dogs' tickets.

    medical and paperwork preparation
Ensured the dogs' vet was registered to issue the required Animal Health Certificates (AHCs) and scheduled an appointment 48 hours before check-in. Swiss Air required additional paperwork, necessitating airport check-in rather than online.

    travel cases
Purchased airline-approved carry cases allowing the dogs to stand, move, and fit under the seat.

  • results

The client experienced smooth travel with their dogs. A layover in Frankfurt did not require additional paperwork, and the process was straightforward. The dogs travelled comfortably, and the detailed preparation paid off with no issues at the airport.
